Season 1, Episode 2

The Jacob Maarse Florist company made a BIG impression on The Profit Show and cemented Marcus Lemonis in the second episode as the "Real Deal" when it comes to Business Reality Shows.

You would think the producers from CNBC would want several success stories coming from The Profit at this stage of a brand new series, but you'd be wrong. The Jacob Maarse Florists proved very fast when you make a deal with Marcus Lemonis, you'd best honor your end of the deal. The Profit is, of course,  a reality show, and as Hank Maarse, the son of Jacob Maarse found out, the consequences are very real.

Hank Maarse has been running Jacob Maarse Florists since his Father passed away in 2010. At the time of the taping of The Profit, Hank owed his Mom $200,000.00 he borrowed from her and an additional $100,000.00 to the banks. To top off all the debt Jacob Maarse Florists has acquired since Hank took over the Family Business, over 30 employees work for this company that hasn't made a profit for years.

In hindsight, Marcus Lemonis should have known working with Hank as a business partner was probably not the wisest decision he's ever made during his very successful career. But the Show must go on and Marcus invests $100,000.00 for 25% stake equity in the Jacob Maarse Flower Business during the second episode of The Profit Show.

The most memorable moment on this episode of The Profit really sticks out is when Maarse confirms Lemonis hasn't invested $100k into the business as the original agreement stated, but closer to $150,000.00 and never mentions wanting a higher stake in the company.

Imagine Kevin O'Leary from The Shark Tank Show doing something like that and not wanting more equity to cover his additional investment. Deals like that never happen on the Shark Tank, but Marcus proved on the second episode of The Profit he builds businesses for the long-term and if it requires additional capital, so be it. Marcus first starts questioning their partnership when Hank tells him it might take 30 years to recoup his investment. For obvious reasons that's probably not the best thing to say to any successful investor, especially on National TV.

In short order, Lemonis takes charge of Jacob Maarse Florists business and starts the process of bringing this dying business back to life. The first thing among many changes is updating the delivery vans with a fresh new look and are you ready for this, an actual phone number on their rolling advertising billboards. Imagine that, forgetting to include your business phone number on the delivery vans. I wonder how much business this alone cost Jacob Maarse Flowers over the past several years?

After Marcus Lemois takes a hands-on approach transforming the Jacob Maarse Florists with a fresh new look and after spending 50% more of his own money than first expected, the Grand Opening day finally arrives. The customers genuinely liked the Jacob Maarse Flowers new makeover during The Profit Show with sales 30% higher than average. More importantly, the Customers, Employees, Marcus Lemonis and everyone was having a great time. That is everyone except for the primary owner Hank Maarse, that decided the re-launch of his business wasn't worth his time to attend. Imagine that.

Marcus shows his real emotions dealing with his new business partner when he calls Hank while filming this episode for The Profit Show. Considering The Profit is exclusively seen on CNBC the #1 Business TV Channel in the World, Maarse wisely decides to attend the re-opening of Jacob Maarse Florists before it was over. Well, that and his new business partner who's seriously ticked off by this point.

The Grand Opening of Jacob Maarse Florists under Marcus Lemonis's vision was an enormous success. But when Hank Maarse showed up the next morning, he wasn't the least bit impressed. Marcus helped raise sales by over 30% in a single day but that was nothing in his eyes.

All of a sudden it was as if he was hit with amnesia and seemed to forget what his business looked like just a week before. He can say whatever he wants, but the fact is, Hank wants to end a deal with Marcus Lemonis even if he has to flat out lie his way out of the deal on National Television.

After spending an entire week resurrecting this failing business, Marcus proves He has a lot more patience than I certainly do. Personally, I'm not sure how I'd react after putting that much time, energy and investment trying to make this business profitable again.

Bottom line - Marcus finally tells Hank, "You Better Call Your Mama and Get My Money Back". Ouch, that had to sting a bit, LOL!

Jacob Maarse Florists Update After The Profit Show

Hank's Mom/ Banker eventually honors the deal with Marcus Lemonis and pays back his entire investment put into Jacob Maarse Florists during this episode.

Jacob Maarse Florists confirms this on Twitter August 7, 2013, with a tweet reading "To all, we have made full payment of $150k to The Profit as agreed upon to be the subject of the recent episode. Obligation has been met".

That's nice they gave Lemonis his investment back, but what about all the time and effort redesigning this entire business? Marcus didn't make a profit in this episode, but he did start gaining a loyal following for his no bs approach when conducting business.

  1. Just watched this episode.

Thanks for sharing the update. Found myself asking "has this guy never seen 'the profit' before?" as I was watching the show, as it was S1E2 the answer is a resounding yes.

  2. It is amazing how people can destroy the legacy of others. This guy from JM did not know anything about making REAL PROFIT until Marcus came into the picture. MARCUS LEMONIS Is the real deal.

  4. Marcus is the real deal.. I met him in person at Sweet Pete's. As soon as he walked into Sweet Pete's , I thought I was watching the show live. He was there doing inventory and he treats and does the same thing that he does on the show. Like any other business and partnership, some people doesn't want a partner or can't handle a partner.

  5. Mama Maarse is probably the real loser. She can't separate family from a losing attitude in her son. If she is smart, she'll fire Hank and get a real leader in there that knows what he is doing.

    1. That is the only right conclusion. Giving her son a monthly allowance in deduction of his inherratence.

    2. She is an enabler........holding her son back and he is 49! Very sad

  6. Hank is the most repulsive person I have ever seen. I cannot believe the store is still standing, but it is, I walk by frequently. I will stop in and check it out and report back.

  7. I've just watched that episode for the first time. Hank is truly a pathetic man - lazy, lying and shameless. His dad would roll in his grave.

  8. What an Ass Hank is. He should be HUMILIATED after watching himself on TV. That poor mother is throwing away her husband's hard earned money on her spoiled brat uneducated (clearly) spoiled son.
Wow..that was a painful episode to watch. I would LOVE an update on how fast that business goes out of business. Guess mama's boy Hanky is going to have to move back home with mama. LOL.

  9. I hope he's changed —I doubt he will considering his age— Hank Maarse is a disgrace from what I witnessed in S1E2. He's immature, irresponsible, unappreciative, and incompetent. In other words, a spoiled brat. He is a legacy killer, and he has no shame.

As anyone can see after his dad passed that created a leadership vacuum. Plus Mrs. Maarse made the situation worse by coddling her boy. She helped convert a successful business into her son's expensive hobby, at best. Her bailout checks are merely a way to salvage the family name as long as the cash is available.

Besides Marcus Lemonis' enduring patience, expertise, and professionalism, the only other bright spot were the employees. I have compassion for them. They deserve better.

  10. The most comtemptable people on The Profit are the owners of 240Sweet, the marshmellow candy company. To say on television that they intentionally used Marcus to get money and publicity without any intention of forming a partnership, plus taking advantage of a dedicated employee with cancer, and openly threatening an employee with her job if she did not say that they were nice people is truly despicable. Too bad Yelp has deleted all of the negative comments on their website so people do not know what lies behind the company's facade. I would never buy anything from them.

  11. OMGosh, just watched this episode for the 1st time. Sad, but as usual, Mr. Lemonis rises above.

  12. A 49 year old mama's boy that makes the gestures of a 12 year old, Hank is a looser with - as Marcus puts it - no balls. This should be an episode for a course in business management for MBAs. I'm curious how the Jacob Maarse customers look at this wimp and continue doing business with such a dishonest person. How many employees have left Maarse because of the poodle puddle walking around telling them that he is the owner?

  13. Just watched this show. Mama Maarse, it is time to cut the purse strings. Your "little boy" needs to grow up. What a gift he was given, and what a sad way he represented his father's legacy. Marcus Lemonis is inspiring.

  14. Quite surprised by Hank's sudden betrayal! As a small business owner, I can understand not wanting to loose equity ownership, but the business was loosing money for years and Hank was given this great opportunity to turn it around for only 25%! Those of us that have watch the show for a while know that such a deal doesn't come around any more. Marcus usually takes a much bigger equity share for his money.

Poor Hank. I wonder if he gets reminded about his loser move from time to time?

    1. It wasn't for 25% of the business. It was for 25% of the profits (which Marcus Lemonis would have made, as the business was making a loss before he got involved).

  15. What dishonorable person. Is this place still in business? I like Marcus he really knows what he is doing. This florist should not last long. If it doesn't prosper the only person who will loose is the mother. She can't keep dumping money into a business that lacks a good leader. On the episode he didn't even know his cost on an arrangement, they made $4 on one arrangement. If Marcus didn't step in I don't this this place would of even lasted another month. When a business depends on one person to run it and they move on the business doesn't usually last, like when the founder of the company passes away.

  16. ive just downloaded every episode........Hank by far is the biggest douchbag ever on The Profit, such a backstabber, i bet he regrets it now.......i hope Marcus got the $100k back im sure he did, looking at google feed bk its 1 star down the board, biggest mistake of his life FOOL

  17. 100% agree with all the comments here. Hank is a looser. I'm surprised Marcus didn't knock him out. Mamma bank Marse needs to take control. Tell her incompetent son to get another job, stand on his own 2 feet and pay his bills. I would boycott that business as long as that prick Hank running it. Much respect to Marcus. He went above and beyond to try and help this guy. Relieved to hear Mamma Marse had honour and paid the money back.

  18. I laughed so hard when he told Hank he was looking for his balls. I couldnt help but crack up. I love watching the show. Marcus says it as it is.

  19. Marcus is a Real Stand Up Man. He saved all those jobs for the Maarse employees. I just saw this episode for the first time. Oh Hank, 49 and still a mama's boy. Hank is definitely no Man, No Balls. I think Hank is jealous of Marcus's Fame and Fortune. Marcus Knows Business, and I am always happy to watch the Professional way he handles conflict.

  20. I just saw this episode, Hank, what a jerk. Marcus is a Real Businessman! I think Hank is jealous BC Marcus HAS BALLS, Marcus is sexy, good looking, and has Fame and Fortune. All of which Hank does not have. I love the Professional way Marcus handles conflict.

  21. How about giving Hank a taste of his own medicine .... place an order ....cancel it at the last minute and tell them"courtesy of The Profit" .....

  22. No surprise that the manager Marina stepped up to become a valuable employee. Nor is it a surprise that mama's boy Hank was a douchebag. The big surprise was how big of a douchebag he really was, and didn't bother to "grow a set" until he figured out how outclassed he was by Marcus. Hey Mama, cut your losses and make this dude get a real job where he actually has to work.

  23. I just saw this episode, omg the owner is a complete idiot.
Marcus how could you not punch this guy.
Obvious problems with delivery n the vans , no phone number displayed n no gps my god Hank you will bury this place with your father.
Employees run do not walk to the nearest exit.
    Go Marcus go

    1. Hank didn't realize he was filmed saying Marcus paid out $150,000! No wonder mom paid back the money. A lawsuit would have been a slam dunk with that video, which obviously her son didn't remember.

    2. I believe mama and Hank talked before Marcus called her. Neither mama nor Hank are good with a handshake. I wasn't surprised with lazy Hank but I was surprised with his mom. Sad.

  24. I watched that episode a couple of times. Even though I am no millionaire or have beaucoup bucks. I have my word, and my word is my bond. When I give you my word that I am going to do this or that, to me it's my bond. And, to seal it with a handshake means everything to me. I need no lawyer or to put it down on paper. What I tell you I'm going to do means I'm going to do it. He shook Marcus's hand, to me that means a done deal. No going back on it. Just like having a contract chiseled into stone. That's what a handshake and my word means to me. I know there's some people out there that you can't trust, but if I say this is what I am going to do, then I'm going to do it. There is only me in my business & I'm winding down. Age & Vietnam is finally catching up to me. But, I still have my word & my honor & that means a lot to me.

  25. I watched this episode this morning. Hank is not a businessman. He lacks what it takes to run a business. He made a mistake by objecting to Marcus' plan. He didnt know how much he had in his flowers? Didn't want phone number on the van? LA location on van 10 years after. Leaving during Grand Opening. It's simple. He is Momma's boy. She knows this but feels sorry for him. He doesn't want to be there. He just wants the Money. WOW.

  27. This Florist and Gift Shop is one of the Best in the USA. And one of the most Prestigious and high-volume shops of its kind. Since the Trump Tax Cuts etc., The Business Has Prospered Quite Substantially. Good Employees Who Are Knowledgeable And Dedicated To Doing Their Job Properly, Will Never Require The Micro-Management and (Hands-On Approach) Of Mr. M. Lemonis.
